The National End of Life Intelligence Network has released a new report, entitled Palliative and end of life care: hospital deaths 2006 to 2017.

The report states, “Approximately half a million people die in England each year. The total number of deaths in England has increased over the last 10 years, yet the number and proportion of hospital deaths have decreased.

It is recognised that, for some people, hospital is the correct place for care, especially those who have an uncertain prognosis or difficult to manage symptoms.

The population is increasing and the number of deaths is projected to increase by roughly 25% between 2017 and 2040.”

“Main findings:

  • the overall proportion of hospital deaths steadily decreased between 2006 and 2017
  • those aged 85 years and older had the lowest proportion of hospital deaths after 2013″
