Lead Medical Examiner for Wales

SAIF has received the following information from NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership: (Welsh version below)

NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP) is pleased to announce that Dr Jason Shannon has been appointed to the role of Lead Medical Examiner for Wales. Dr Shannon will oversee the Wales Medical Examiner Service that will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under a Coroner’s jurisdiction. 

Hosted by NWSSP, the Lead Medical Examiner role will provide leadership and guidance to ensure that the Medical Examiner Service is established and governed effectively, providing advice where necessary on the configuration of local systems, whilst offer leadership and support to Medical Examiners across Wales.

Graduating from Birmingham Medical School with a BSC in Pathology in 1996, Dr Shannon has a long and diverse history within the medical profession. He began his Pathology career as a Senior House Officer (SHO) in Bristol before moving to the Wales Deanery in 1998 to begin specialty training.

In 2003 Dr Shannon was appointed Consultant Pathologist in Cwm Taf Health University Board becoming Clinical Director for Pathology in 2007.

In 2012 Dr Shannon became the Health Board’s Assistant Medical Director for Service Strategy which also saw him establish the Mortality Review Programme before undertaking the role of National Clinical Lead for Mortality Review in Wales in 2013. In 2017 Dr Shannon was tasked with assisting Welsh Government with the implementation of the Medical Examiner System where he completed his Medical Examiner training.

      Mae Partneriaeth Cydwasanaethau GIG Cymru yn falch o gyhoeddi bod Dr Jason Shannon wedi’i benodi i rôl Archwilydd Meddygol Arweiniol Cymru. Bydd Dr Shannon yn  goruchwylio Gwasanaeth Archwilio Meddygol Cymru a fydd yn craffu ar bob marwolaeth  ar draws ardal leol nad yw’n dod o dan awdurdodaeth y Crwner. 

      Lletyir rôl yr Archwilydd Meddygol Arweiniol gan PCGC a bydd yn darparu  arweinyddiaeth a chanllawiau i sicrhau bod y Gwasanaeth Archwilio Meddygol yn cael ei  sefydlu a’i lywodraethu’n effeithiol, gan ddarparu cyngor, lle bo angen, ar ffurfweddiad  systemau lleol, tra’n cynnig arweiniad a chefnogaeth i Archwilwyr Meddygol ledled Cymru.

      Graddiodd Dr Shannon o Ysgol Feddygol Birmingham gyda BSc mewn Patholeg ym  1996 ac mae ganddo hanes hir ac amrywiol yn y proffesiwn meddygol. Dechreuodd ar  ei yrfa Patholeg fel Uwch Swyddog Tŷ ym Mryste cyn symud i Ddeoniaeth Cymru ym  1998 i ddechrau ar hyfforddiant arbenigol.

      Penodwyd Dr Shannon yn Ymgynghorydd Patholeg ym Mwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Cwm Taf  yn 2003 a daeth yn Gyfarwyddwr Clinigol Patholeg yn 2007.

      Daeth Dr Shannon yn Gyfarwyddwr Meddygol Cynorthwyol Strategaeth Gwasanaeth y  Bwrdd Iechyd yn 2012, a sefydlodd y Rhaglen Adolygu Marwolaethau cyn ymgymryd â  rôl Arweinydd Clinigol Cenedlaethol ar gyfer Adolygu Marwolaethau yng Nghymru yn  2013.

Yn 2017, cafodd Dr Shannon y dasg o gynorthwyo Llywodraeth Cymru i        weithredu’r System Archwilwyr Meddygol lle cwblhaodd ei hyfforddiant Archwilydd  Meddygol.
