Energy update: crematoria unlikely to be affected by gas disruptions

SAIF is pleased to see that gas-fired crematoria are unlikely to be affected in the event of disruption to gas supplies this winter.

Following consultation with SAIF and other partners in the funeral sector, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has provided assurances that crematoria would not be subject to restrictions.

This is due to the sector using a small amount of fuel compared to other industries.

SAIF is also advised that crematoria do not qualify for gas supply prioritisation, however, operators who believe their sites should be given priority status should apply to: CORONERS@Justice.gov.ukwith subject heading “Crematorium application to Category B”.

Crematoria fall under Category B because they have “relevant customers for which the sudden loss of gas causes or threatens to cause serious damage, for an unacceptably prolonged period, to human welfare, the environment or the security of the United Kingdom that cannot be reasonably mitigated”.

With regard to possible electricity disruption, last Autumn SAIF petitioned the Ministry of Justice for a special provision to be made for funeral homes, but we have been advised by the UK Government that the funeral sector is unlikely to be given prioritisation for electricity.

To be given priority for electricity, the customer must meet a definition of “major” or be “of national significance”. On an individual basis the sector would not meet this description as the service as a whole would continue to operate, especially given the potential and available mitigations.

Crucially, sites must also not have, nor be suitable for, backup power generation (SAIF advises independent funeral directors to develop a back-up power supply strategy, i.e. identify where you would source suitable generators for your premises).

However, individual sites can choose to apply for prioritisation as applications will be considered and treated on a case by case basis. Full details can be found here.
