SAIF’s Autumn Education Day in Wales offers seven hours of information filled presentations, networking and an exhibition of specially selected funeral product and services.

Venues

We are using two venues for the Education Day and the Dinner. Please note that the annual Cardiff Half Marathon will take place in the city centre on Sunday 1st October. Several roads in the centre will be closed from 5.00 am until around lunch time. Neither of our venues is affected by the road closures.

If you are planning to stay over on Saturday 30th September, we recommend you check that your accommodation is unaffected by the road closures.

Education Day Venue:

The Vale Resort, Hensol Park, Hensol, Vale of Glamorgan, CF72 8JY The hotel is situated in a rural area. Find directions on the hotel’s website.

Dinner Venue:

The dinner will be held in the V Works room at the Village Hotel at 7.30 pm. The hotel is situated very close to Junction 32 of the M4. Find directions on the hotel’s website.

The hotel is unaffected by the Half Marathon road closures and is offering 10% discount on accommodation with code PRO10A.

Speaker: Professor Heather Conway, Queens University, Belfast

Heather Conway is Professor in the School of Law at Queens University, Belfast. Her work focuses primarily on the legal issues surrounding bodily disposal laws and treatment of the dead.

Professor Conway is particularly interested in the legal frameworks around burial and cremation; disputes around funerals; exhuming the dead and memorialisation.

Linked to this, her research also looks at selected aspects of succession law, and the legal and emotional dynamics of inheritance contests within families.

Speaker: Amy White, Head of Training & Wellbeing at Loch HR

Amy is an employment law solicitor and experienced trainer who heads up the Training and Wellbeing Division of Loch Associates Group. 

Amy uses her experience, expertise and passion for people management to present regularly on topics including employee wellbeing and mental health, managing menopause in the workplace and changes in employment law and HR best practice. She also shares her experience and knowledge by writing articles and is often asked to comment in the media, featuring on television too.

Speaker: Declan Maguire, SAIF 1st Vice President

Declan is director of Anderson Maguire Funeral Directors, Treasurer and Membership Officer for SAIF Scotland and 1st Vice President of the National SAIF Executive Committee.

Speaker: Angela Maguire M.A., Managing Director of De Exeter House

Angela has had an extensive working career in the fields of education, mental health and addiction. She has worked within Social Work, as a senior counsellor for addiction supporting dysfunctional families.

She then set up her own stress management company, and worked throughout the UK and Ireland with large companies, assisting them to develop stress management training programmes, and support services for employees with mental health or addiction issues.

In 2010 Angela founded De Exeter House, a residential stress and rehabilitation facility based in Ireland.  De Exeter House provides the facilities for individuals to rebalance themselves, take time out, and be guided through an individually crafted programme designed to address their specific challenges.

Speaker: Katie StevensonFitness Trainer and Mental Health and Exercise Coach and Funeral Director

Katie is a second generation funeral director with Paul Stevenson Funerals in Ayrshire.

Speaker: Dr Jason Shannon, Lead Medical Examiner for Wales

Dr Shannon is a Consultant Pathologist with interests in autopsy, urological and lung pathology. Having been a Clinical Director, Assistant Medical Director and also leading the Mortality Review programme in Wales since 2013, he was appointed as the first Lead Medical Examiner for Wales in 2019 responsible for the roll out of the Welsh Medical Examiner system.
