SAIF is urgently seeking clarification from the Government regarding the timetable for funeral regulation, following Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s resignation this week.
Earlier this Spring, it was revealed that former Health Secretary Wes Streeting would lead the regulation of funeral directors in England, with an announcement expected in July. However, the recent upheaval in Downing Street has left many wondering if this vital area of Government business will be delayed.
To that end, SAIF is engaging partners in Government to understand the potential ramifications of a change of Prime Minister and Cabinet.
The recent media attention surrounding the Legacy Independent Funeral Directors case, alongside ongoing discussion linked to the Fuller Inquiry, has reinforced the importance of clear standards, accountability and public confidence across the funeral sector.
For many years, SAIF has consistently advocated for meaningful and proportionate oversight that protects bereaved families, supports informed choice and reflects the professionalism demonstrated every day by responsible independent funeral directors serving their communities.
Paul Allcock, SAIF Government Liaison, said:
“Members understandably want reassurance following recent government statements and media coverage. SAIF is actively engaging with Government and sector partners to ensure the voice of independent funeral directors continues to be represented throughout these discussions.
Our focus remains on supporting members, protecting bereaved families and helping shape a framework that is fair, practical and centred on dignity, professionalism and care.”
SAIF will continue to keep members informed as further information becomes available.
