Fuller Inquiry government update on funeral sector regulation

The Department of Health and Social Care has now published a Written Ministerial Statement updating Parliament on the government’s progress in responding to the Phase 2 report.

The government has accepted most of the Inquiry’s recommendations in full. It is continuing to consider its approach to recommendations concerning the regulation of the funeral sector, including the practical implications, costs and impact on businesses.

SAIF notes that the government is continuing to consider its approach to regulating the funeral sector, and we are encouraged to read that the authorities intend to ensure that any future changes improve standards and oversight while remaining proportionate and sustainable.

Today’s update indicates that this work will continue under the government’s next health secretary. We look forward to working constructively with the relevant ministers and officials when they are ready to take the proposals forward.

SAIF will continue to ensure that the views and practical experiences of independent funeral directors are represented throughout this process.

The SAIF team is reviewing the statement in detail and will provide members with further information in due course. As part of our continued engagement, we will emphasise the importance of prioritising funeral sector regulation when ministers reconvene.
