How SAIF quality assurance supports funeral directors and families

Learn how SAIF quality assurance works, what assessments cover and how SAIF standards support independent funeral directors and families.

Quality assurance helps funeral directors demonstrate their commitment to professional care. It also gives families greater confidence when choosing who to trust with the care of someone who has died.

For SAIF members, quality assurance is an established part of membership. Assessments are included at no additional cost, alongside practical guidance and support from the SAIF team.

What is SAIF quality assurance?

SAIF quality assurance is the process used to assess whether members meet the professional requirements set out in the SAIF Code of Practice.

The Code covers the care of people who have died, the service provided to bereaved families and the way members operate their businesses.

Membership of SAIF is not mandatory. However, once a funeral director becomes a member, following SAIF’s standards is a condition of membership.

What standards do SAIF members follow?

The SAIF Code of Practice covers important areas of funeral care and business practice, including

  • dignified and respectful care
  • identification and traceability
  • appropriate premises and facilities
  • refrigeration and care records
  • staff competence and training
  • clear information about services and costs
  • viewing and funeral arrangements
  • the management of ashes
  • complaints and business continuity
  • arrangements involving other care providers

These requirements support a consistent and accountable approach to caring for people who have died and serving bereaved families.

Are SAIF members assessed?

Yes. Funeral directors applying to join SAIF undergo background checks and a quality assurance assessment before their application is considered.

Once accepted, members remain subject to continuing assessment. This helps SAIF confirm that they maintain the standards required as a condition of membership.

An assessment may consider

  • funeral premises and viewing facilities
  • mortuary and care facilities
  • refrigeration
  • identification procedures
  • care records
  • staff competence and training
  • complaints procedures
  • business continuity planning
  • arrangements with third-party care providers

Assessments are included in SAIF membership at no additional cost. Members also receive practical guidance to help them understand the requirements and make any improvements identified through the assessment.

Is SAIF ISO 9001 certified?

Yes. SAIF is certified to ISO 9001:2026 for its quality management system. ISO 9001 is an internationally recognised quality management standard. SAIF’s certification provides independent assurance that its own processes for managing and improving services meet recognised requirements. Certification has been provided by the British Assessment Bureau, a certification body accredited by the UK Accreditation Service.

This means SAIF’s own quality management system has been independently assessed and audited. It does not mean that individual members are separately certified to ISO 9001 through their membership.

What consumer protection does SAIF provide?

SAIF is approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute as an alternative dispute resolution body and have to adhere to certain requirements as well as being audited on a bi-annual basis.

Alternative dispute resolution provides a formal way of considering eligible complaints that have not been resolved directly between a family and a funeral director.

This approval means SAIF has met the relevant criteria for resolving disputes fairly and professionally. It provides an additional level of accountability and consumer protection for families using a SAIF member. Learn more about SAIF’s alternative dispute resolution approval

How is SAIF recognised by government and public bodies?

SAIF is an established voice in discussions with government, regulators and organisations involved in funeral care and consumer protection.

This includes contributing evidence to reviews and consultations conducted by the Competition and Markets Authority. SAIF’s formal consultation responses have been published on the UK Government website. This reflects its established role in discussions about funeral pricing, transparency and professional standards

Public guidance from several local authorities also signposts families to funeral directors belonging to recognised trade associations, including SAIF.

Leeds City Council, Durham County Council and Dorset Council each refer to SAIF in their guidance about choosing a funeral director. Their guidance also refers to the codes of practice maintained by funeral trade associations.

These references do not mean that government or local authorities formally endorse individual SAIF members. They demonstrate the established role that recognised trade associations play in supporting standards, accountability and informed choice.

Do SAIF members need to pay for another quality assessment?

SAIF members already receive quality assurance assessments through their membership at no additional cost.
Members may be approached about other commercial inspection, certification or standards services. Before paying for an additional service, members should understand what it provides, what recognition it carries and how it differs from the quality assurance, oversight and support already included in SAIF membership.

Useful questions to ask include

  • What standards will be assessed?
  • Are the assessment criteria publicly available?
  • Who conducts the assessment?
  • What qualifications and experience do the assessors hold?
  • How are decisions reviewed or challenged?
  • What independent oversight applies?
  • What complaints and consumer protection arrangements are in place?
  • What do the initial and ongoing fees cover?
  • How often is reassessment required?

Clear information helps members make an informed decision and avoid paying for services that duplicate quality assurance and support already included in their membership.

What can members expect from a SAIF quality assurance assessment?

SAIF assessors understand the funeral profession and appreciate that members may feel a little apprehensive about an assessment visit. The assessors are friendly, professional and approachable. They’ll explain the process clearly and give members plenty of opportunity to ask questions.

The assessment is constructive and supportive. It helps members recognise what they’re doing well, talk through SAIF’s requirements and understand where any improvements may be needed.

The SAIF team is also available during business hours to answer questions and provide practical guidance before and after an assessment.

What does SAIF quality assurance mean for families?

For families, choosing a SAIF member means choosing a funeral director that has committed to professional standards, continuing assessment and accountability.

Members are expected to care for people who have died with dignity and respect. They must also provide clear information, maintain appropriate facilities and have suitable procedures for addressing concerns.

No assessment process can guarantee that a concern will never arise. The important difference is that SAIF members have agreed to follow an established Code of Practice and remain accountable to SAIF’s requirements if something goes wrong.

The SAIF logo is more than a membership badge. It represents a continuing commitment to care, transparency and professional responsibility.

What does quality assurance mean for SAIF members?

For members, quality assurance provides a practical opportunity to review their arrangements and demonstrate that they meet SAIF’s requirements.

It is supported by professional guidance, training, business support, government representation and an established complaints process.

Quality assurance is not simply about identifying concerns. It helps members recognise good practice, understand where improvements may be needed and serve families with confidence.
