SAIF National President
Alun Tucker was installed as National President of SAIF at our AGM in March 2018. In his own words, “I started in funerals at the age of 14 by helping my father, Eddie Tucker of Swansea, within his own business. I passed my Diploma in Funeral Directing in May 1981 while working at Attree & Kent in Brighton.
My career in management started within Co-operative Funeral Service firstly in Leicester 1986-1989 then with Ipswich Co-operative Society (later Ipswich & Norwich) from 1989 – 1995. I was firstly General Manager then Managing Director of H L Hawes & Son Ltd in Ilford, Essex from 1996 until the business was sold in August 2016 to the family owned and run West & Coe, with whom I remain involved in the business on a casual basis.
Having joined the SAIF Executive Committee in 1998, I was elected National President for 2004-2005. After a previous spell as Acting Chief Executive Officer I became Executive Chairman in September 2012 and stepped down from that role in March 2017 when there was a clear need for a full time Chief Executive Officer.
As far as Education is concerned I was Chairman of the Independent Funeral Directors College from 2005 to 2008 and am now Company Secretary of the British Institute of Funeral Directors.
Although retired from day to day funeral directing I keep abreast of current affairs through my involvement with West & Coe, working as a Consultant to a small number of businesses and through media/social media and friends within the profession.
My chosen charity is Great Ormond Street Hospital. My colleague Jamie West and his wife Jade have received tremendous support from the hospital since their daughter Eva was born in October last year. I would like to raise an amount of money to support the hospital in the great work they do.
