London Cinema screening of Almost HeavenSeptember 26, 2017 // No Comments
SAIF has been contacted by Bertha DocHouse (dochouse.org), London’s documentary cinema, located inside Curzon Bloomsbury who thought that their next screening might be of interest to SAIF members and other funeral directors.
From 28th September, the cinema will be screening Almost Heaven from British director Carol Salter. The film follows seventeen-year-old Ying Ling as she moves away from home for the first time in rural China to train and become a mortician at one of country’s largest funeral homes. Despite her fear of ghosts and dead bodies, she learns the spa rituals of cleaning and massaging the corpses and finds solace from her macabre role through her playful banter with another of the young morticians. Together, they spend their time off talking about their hopes, fears and plans for the future. As one of many rural-to-urban teenagers working to support her family, Ying Ling must immerse and acclimatise herself in the surreal and grinding world of China’s industrialisation of mortality. Following the first screening of the film at Bertha DocHouse on 28th September, there will be a Q&A with the film’s director Carol Salter. Information and tickets available here.
