Record number of MPs sign petition for financial help for children’s funerals

Fair Funerals recently reported that a record number of MPs has signed an Early Day Motion (EDM) to end children’s funeral fees. Sponsored by MP Carolyn Harris the EDM recognises that approximately 5,000 infants and children pass away each year in the UK and that the annual cost of fees associated with their funerals is £10 million.

This cost imposes a significant and unexpected financial burden on bereaved parents. Whilst  some local authorities, as well as religious officiants and undertakers, currently waive all or a proportion of the fees associated with children’s funerals, many families are only able to pay the costs due to fundraising by individuals, community groups and schools.  The EDM asks the Government to establish a specific fund which local authorities could use to pay the costs associated with children’s funerals.

So far, 160 MPs have signed the petition.  Read the full article here.
