SAIF Member questions council’s funeral costs increase

Director of Bowley Funeral Directors in Hassocks, West Sussex, Paul Bowley has questioned his local council’s plan to increase funeral costs by up to 43%.  Mr Bowley is worried that the increase would put ‘”further strain” on families in the city.  The council is trying to bring its prices in line with neighbouring councils, but the increase means that residents would need to pay over 16% extra to use Woodvale Chapel for weekend services and 17-18% extra for graveyard plots.

Mr Bowley has signed up to the Fair Funerals Pledge, which works towards ending funeral poverty.  He is concerned that the public will blame funeral directors for the price increase, but third party costs, such as the council’s costs, are outside of a funeral director’s control.  His comments were featured in the Brighton and Hove Argus Newspaper, which you may read here.
