Stay SAIF: Avoid cowboys when appointing a Fire Specialist

Following a prosecution in March this year, businesses are being warned to beware of those offering fire services without the necessary credentials.

As the fire safety industry is unregulated, there can be confusion when looking to appoint experts to assist with Fire Risk assessments and Fire Extinguisher companies.  SAIF recommend that Members ask for evidence of registration with an established body such as the Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE) or the British Approvals for Fire Equipment (BAFE).  Individual engineers should also carry a card confirming that they are a registered fire extinguisher service technician.

The IFE is a registered charity working for society’s benefit. Founded in 1918, the IFE assesses knowledge of fire and professional experience, awarding internationally recognised membership grades and fire-related qualifications.  BAFE is the independent third party registration body for the fire protection industry. For more than 25 years they have developed schemes for UKAS accredited certification bodies to assess and approve companies to recognised standards.
