Funeral homes increasingly using dogs to comfort mournersJuly 24, 2015 // No Comments
US Fox News recently published an article online about the increasing number of dogs used to comfort mourners in funeral homes.
In the experience of funeral directors, dogs can lighten the awkward and tense atmosphere at a wake or funeral service and seem to detect which of the guests most needs their help. Mark Krause, owner and president of Krause Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Milwaukee says, “In a funeral home, people are typically on edge, uncomfortable. But everyone lights up, everyone has to greet the dog.”
Mr Krause introduced their family pet Oliver, a Portuguese water dog, into their funeral home, where Oliver worked for 10 years. Oliver had been trained as a therapy dog and had worked in schools, nursing homes and hospitals, when the family decided they could use his skills at their funeral home. The idea is that having the dog around gives mourners something else to focus on and can be particularly helpful for grieving children.
