Changes to Death Certification in Scotland

May 14, 2015   //   No Comments

New arrangements on the registration and certification of deaths in Scotland were introduced on 13 May 2015.

One of the main changes is the establishment of the Death Certification Review Service which is run by Healthcare Improvement Scotland. The review service checks on the accuracy of a sample of Medical Certificates of Cause of Death (MCCDs). The reviews are designed to:

  • improve the accuracy of MCCDs
  • provide better quality information about causes of death so that health services can be better prepared for the future, and
  • ensure that the processes around death certification are robust and have appropriate safeguards in place.

On the SAIF Scotland page you’ll find links to the Scottish Government’s website, which provides a summary of the changes and a Questions and Answers document. There is also a leaflet on changes to deaths abroad.
