Scollen & Wright Funeral Service Ltd, Sunderland
Founded in 1993, award winning Scollen & Wright Funeral Service Ltd has been built upon the continued success of providing funerals of quality and dignity throughout the Sunderland area. Based in three areas of Sunderland, namely Silksworth, Grangetown and Ryhope, they are well equipped to fulfil the needs of people in these communities as well as the entire Sunderland area and beyond.
While providing traditional values, Scollen and Wright know times change and understand that families today need to be secure in the knowledge their loved ones are cared for by funeral professionals who set high standards and follow quality codes of practice. It was with this in mind that Scollen and Wright joined SAIF as a way to provide families with the peace of mind they demand and deserve – the peace of mind that comes when knowing that they offer high standards of quality care for them and their loved ones in their time of need.
C. Townsend & Son Ltd, Harrogate
At the age of 21, Henry Claude Townsend completed a 7 year apprenticeship and was offered 3d an hour extra pay by his employer. His father felt that he was undervalued for such a talented young craftsman, and so encouraged Henry Claude to set up his own joinery business, where coffin manufacture and funerals soon became part of the work, and H. C. Townsend was formed in 1927.
Kenneth Brian, only child of Claude and Beatrice (Kitty), joined the business in 1952. In 1981 David, eldest son of Brian and Mary, joined the business and at the age of just 17, carried out his first funeral. In October 2004, Brian and Mary retired and handed the reins to David and his wife, Ann. In 2007, building works began to transform the old joinery workshops into a refurbished Chapel of Rest, modern mortuary and new garaging to accommodate the business’s first fleet of vehicles.
“We joined SAIF because as our business grew and as we got busier, we realised we had to put further controls in place to safeguard ourselves and our business. We have found SAIF to be very informative and helpful,” David commented.
Helen Ashmore Funeral Service was established in September 2013 by sisters Helen and Gill Ashmore. The idea was born from Helen seeing a gap for an independent, female, funeral director in the town, having lived in Cleveleys for 30 years. The sisters wanted to provide this service for the local residents. Helen has been an experienced funeral director for some 15 years and has built up an excellent reputation in the Blackpool area. Gill has been in customer service for over 30 years and has a wealth of experience in dealing sensitively and professionally with customers and clients.
Helen & Gill explained that, “We are totally committed to providing families of Cleveleys and the surrounding areas a service renowned for its caring and sensitive manner, whilst paying attention to the finer details and always trying to exceed expectations at a time when a family comes to need our services.”
Both Gill and Helen are extensively involved in lots of community events supporting the local hospice and local churches, with a wish to commit long term to their community, they are gradually building up the trust of the local residents to the extent that they are now deemed as friends. Helen also explained “We are proud to announce we have become members of SAIF as we wanted to be associated with them, as they are dedicated to serving the local independent family owned funeral director and our community. We also felt that this was the right organisation to join to help us move our business forward with their help and advice, along with many other benefits of being a member.”
