Funeral Poverty Bill Read in Parliament

South Shields MP Emma Lewell-Buck presented her Funeral Services Bill in Parliament on 9th December under the ten minute rule.

Ms Lewell-Buck’s proposed bill calls for a review of funeral costs and for the provision of an affordable simple service.  There have been several recent reports outlining rising funeral costs and how many families struggle to provide a good send-off for their loved ones, often turning to payday lenders.  The MP stated that some families are even having to bury relatives in their back gardens.  She added that the government’s funeral payments scheme took weeks to be processed, with half of applicants rejected.

The bill is scheduled for its second reading debate on 23rd January 2015. Further information may be read on the UK Parliament website.
