SAIF supports Organ Donor Register

SAIF is delighted to announce a new initiative to support the work of the NHS Organ Donor Register.

SAIF is extending the range of literature available to members with the launch of the SAIF supported Organ Donation leaflet. SAIF Executive Chairman Alun Tucker explains, “What better legacy is there than the gift of life? Many people believe in organ donation, but unless they join the NHS Organ Donor Register, their families may be unaware that they want to be donor. SAIF is eager to help promote the message as widely as possible and I know that we can count on our members to support our initiative.”

Claire Dolling, senior partnership development officer at NHS Blood and Transplant comments, “Around three people die every day in need of an organ transplant.  A significant barrier preventing patients from getting the transplant they so desperately need is the fact that four out of ten families say no to donation when a loved one dies in circumstances when they could donate their organs.

“We welcome all opportunities to increase awareness of organ and tissue donation and thank SAIF for backing our campaign.  We hope it will encourage SAIF members to join the register themselves and spell out their decision to donate with loved ones, as well as give members the information they need to promote organ donation to others.”

Only around 5,000 people die in the UK each year in circumstances where they can donate their organs.  Families are more likely to agree to donation when they know what their loved one wanted.  Almost anyone can be considered as a tissue donor, so people are more likely to become a tissue donor than an organ donor. Donated tissue such as skin, bones and eyes can save or dramatically improve the lives of many people suffering from illness or injury.

SAIF Business Centre will be posting leaflets to Members over the next few weeks.
